Friday Fitness

Friday! Which means 1 week to go until my Race for Life Twilight 5k! Eek!
I’m pretty nervous, but excited too. It will be totally different running with other people and I’m really looking forward to it.
Thank you to everyone who has been so generous and sponsored me so far, I really appreciate it.

I’m up to Week 8 with the Couch to 5k program now, which is 28minute runs- they’re hard work, but I’m persevering. When I think that I was struggling with the 3minute intervals at the start, it’s so encouraging to see how far I’ve come! I really think that slow and steady was the way to do it, and has made the increases seem manageable and not discouraged me.
I’m also still going strong with my “star chart” which is a great way to visually represent my achievements and keep me on track with my plan to exercise 4-5 times a week. Yes, I slip up and don’t always make that goal but it’s definitely rewarding to give myself a star at the end of a hard workout 🙂

My only setback so far has been the transition to colder weather which makes it harder to run in the evening. The cold aggravates my asthma and can make it difficult to breathe until I’ve warmed up, so I’ve been going out at lunchtime instead when it’s not as chilly. I expect I’ll get used to the temperature eventually but having started running in the Spring/Summer I just need to adjust. I’ve bought a neckwarmer/buff which I’ll trial to see if this makes things easier- warming the air before it gets to the lungs can ease any breathing issues, which is why breathing through your nose is recommended, but can be difficult if you have a stuffy nose or any kind of winter cold!

Fun Links:

1. Using your herbs in the garden to make butter that can be frozen and used throughout the winter- genius! (can be done with herbs bought from the supermarket too, if you just fancy having some sage butter on standby…)
2. A tasty toastie filled with spicy warming autumnal flavours, yum!
3. I love all the Roger la Borde Elegant Owls stationery- Mark gave me a notebook, and I’ve just bought these cute cards. I can’t wait to write to people using them! My Mum and Granny are always sending me little notes and I’d love to do the same…
