Wednesday’s Movie Madness

Today’s film of choice is a fun kids movie with some great adult humour throughout…

Pirates! An Adventure with Scientists (or Pirates! Band of Misfits- original title)

This animated Aardman adventure is based on the books by Gideon Defoe dealing with a hapless crew of pirates. Some other titles include:

The Pirates! in an Adventure with Whaling
The Pirates! in an Adventure with Communists
The Pirates! in an Adventure with Napoleon
The Pirates! in an Adventure with the Romantics

The books aren’t aimed at children and much of the humour relies on an adult appreciation of cliche and irony- they have been described as a cross between a kids book and an episode of Blackadder! However, enough changes have been made to ensure the movie is suitably entertaining for young ones while still retaining some more complex references to keep adults engaged.

The film itself has been well received and has good reviews from critics and viewers alike.

Great cast:
Pirate Captain- Hugh Grant
Number Two Pirate- Martin Freeman
Charles Darwin- David Tennant
Queen Victoria- Imelda Staunton

I really enjoyed this film- very funny and a light-hearted storyline. Predictable but entertaining all the same, and some extra hidden jokes for those with keen eyes (one of the pirates wears a Blue Peter badge on his hat…). Great relaxing afternoon viewing 🙂

Score: 4/5

Enjoy your evening!
